The Art of Listening:what interior design taught me about creating events in Braga

I learned to listen to people’s dreams through my years in interior design. Every client arrived with references, wishes and expectations. My work began with understanding what those choices meant in their lives and how they could take shape within a space.

That ability developed through practice, observation and thoughtful questions. I learned to recognise priorities, interpret ideas that were still taking shape and guide decisions in a way that respected each client’s individuality.

Today, that experience shapes how we create events at Oboé by Lu Marinho.

Understanding the Purpose Before Planning the Event

Before choosing a menu or planning a room layout, we want to understand the purpose of the gathering. Who will be there? What are they celebrating? How does the host imagine experiencing the day?

The answers guide the atmosphere, layout, infrastructure, food, lighting, music and pace of service. They also help us coordinate the professionals involved around a shared intention.

For fellow business owners, I believe there is a useful lesson here: listening becomes a competitive advantage when it informs practical decisions and consistent service. What we learn about a client needs to reach our team and shape every stage of delivery.

Managing the Process So the Host Can Enjoy the Occasion

We understand the natural anxiety that comes before an event. Hosts bring together people who matter to them, invest time and resources and build expectations around an occasion that cannot be recreated in exactly the same way.

Taking ownership of the process means accepting that responsibility. We plan, coordinate the details and oversee delivery so that the host can be present, connect with guests and celebrate with confidence and peace of mind.

Different Events, Personal Attention

At Oboé, we welcome intimate weddings and destination weddings in Braga, pre-wedding celebrations, welcome parties and post-wedding gatherings, as well as baptisms, birthdays, wedding anniversaries, vow renewals and graduation celebrations.

We also host corporate and cultural events, including company dinners, Christmas parties, product launches, networking events, podcast recordings, art openings and training sessions.

Each format calls for its own approach. A training session needs an environment that supports learning and participation. A networking event should make introductions and conversations feel natural. A family celebration requires attention to the different generations sharing the occasion.

Experiences That Become Part of Life Stories

Located in Braga’s historic centre, within the Theatro Circo building, Oboé offers different settings that allow us to shape each experience around its purpose.

My background in design taught me to translate aspirations into spaces. Hospitality allows me to bring that experience to welcoming people and caring for their important moments.

That is the mission of Oboé by Lu Marinho: to create memorable sensory experiences that celebrate the beginning, or the continuation, of people’s life stories.
